A balustrade along a void, stairwell or mezzanine has to be safe first and foremost. It also largely determines how the space feels. The choice between glass with steel or all steel makes a real difference here.
Safety first
A balustrade prevents people from falling. Building regulations therefore set requirements for, among other things, the height, the size of the openings and whether children can climb it. A balustrade with glass forms a closed barrier. That gives peace of mind if there are small children or pets in the house. With an all-steel balustrade, the spacing and direction of the bars determine how safe it is.
Sense of space and light
Glass lets the light through and the eye simply looks past it. A void therefore stays open and spacious, even though the barrier is closed. A steel balustrade with upright or horizontal bars is transparent too, but draws a clearer line through the room. That suits an industrial or, indeed, a classic interior. Black steel in particular is very popular at the moment.
Maintenance
A powder-coated steel balustrade is easy to keep clean; a damp cloth is usually enough. Stainless steel is low-maintenance too and lasts a very long time, without warping or bending. Glass needs a little more attention, because fingerprints and dust show up more quickly. A steel top rail for the hand to rest on keeps the glass cleaner.
