Powder coating or hot-dip galvanising?

Which finish suits indoor and outdoor work.

The finish determines how long steel stays beautiful

Untreated steel rusts. That is why every steel product is given a finish. Powder coating and hot-dip galvanising are the two best known, and each has a job of its own.

What is powder coating?

With powder coating, a coloured powder is applied to the steel and then cured in an oven. This creates an even, hard layer in the colour of your choice. Powder coating is possible in any RAL colour, from deep black to a bronze tone. It is the standard finish for indoor work such as steel doors, screens, handrails, balustrades and furniture.

What is hot-dip galvanising?

With hot-dip galvanising, the steel product is dipped into a bath of molten zinc. The zinc bonds to the steel and protects it against rust, including in corners, joints and on the inside of box sections that a brush or spray gun can hardly reach. A galvanised product has a silver-grey colour that becomes somewhat duller over time.

Indoors or outdoors?

Indoors, rust is rarely a problem and the focus is mainly on colour and appearance. Powder coating is then the logical choice. Outdoors, steel has to cope with rain, damp and changes in temperature, so good protection against rust matters most. That is why outdoor staircases at Kaaijk are hot-dip galvanised.

  • Indoors: powder coating, in any RAL colour
  • Outdoors: hot-dip galvanising for protection
  • Outdoors in colour: galvanising and powder coating together

The combination: galvanising and powder coating

Would you still like a colour outdoors, for example for a black garden gate or balcony railing? Then the steel can first be hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated. The zinc provides the protection, the powder coating the colour. For railings and gates we choose galvanising, powder coating or both, depending on the material.

Choosing a colour

When we come to measure up, we bring colour samples. That way you see the colour in real light and next to your own materials, such as wood, natural stone or window frames. Torn between two shades? We are happy to think along with you.
