Steel door or screen: what to look out for?

Profile, glazing layout and colour together determine the result.

A steel door is made to measure down to the detail

A steel door or screen makes a room lighter and gives an interior character. Because everything is made to measure, you make a number of choices along the way. These are the most important ones.

The profile sets the line

The profile is the steel frame that holds the glass. An angle profile gives the fine, slim lines you know from classic steel doors. A box section is a closed profile and looks sleeker and sturdier. If you want the steel itself to stay visible, choose bright steel.

  • Angle profile: slim and classic
  • Box section: sleek and robust
  • HOP profile
  • Bright steel: the steel stays visible

Glazing layout: calm or striking

The glazing layout is the way the glass is divided by upright and horizontal glazing bars. A few horizontal bars at the same height as other doors and windows in the house give a calm overall look. A playful layout with panes of different sizes turns the door into an eye-catcher instead. Also consider the height of the bars in relation to furniture, the worktop or a handrail, so that the lines in the room line up.

Glass: clear, frosted or reeded

A steel door or screen is fitted with safety glass. Clear glass lets in the most light and gives the most see-through. If you want more privacy, for example for a bathroom, wardrobe wall or study, frosted or reeded glass can be a good choice. The glass is fitted after the door has been installed. If you wish, everything is then sealed to the walls by a professional sealant specialist.

Colour: black is not the only option

Black is the best-known colour for a steel door, but the frame can be powder coated in any RAL colour. Think of different shades of black or a bronze tone that feels warmer. When we come to measure up, we bring colour samples, so you can see the colour in your own room and in your own light.

Pivot, hinged or sliding

The way the door opens also determines how it works in your space.

  • Pivot door: turns on a vertical pivot point and opens both ways
  • Hinged door: the familiar swing door, also as a double door
  • Sliding door: slides along the wall and needs no swing space
  • Door with side light: a fixed glass panel beside the door for extra light

Not sure yet? When we measure up we discuss the options, after which you receive a clear design drawing. That way you know exactly what your door or screen will look like.
